Rescue / Adoption - How our program works |
| |
"Garbage is Recyclable, Parrots aren't." Before you buy, think adoption first!
Number of birds we have taken in to re-home 2003 = 58 2004 = 124 2005 = 110 2006 = 200 2007 = 177 Total to date = 669 Finch to Macaws
Read some of the Success Stories of birds that have passed through Beak n Wings
WE ARE A NO KILL SHELTER "Beak n Wings does not euthanize birds due to over population". This does not mean that there will not be any euthanasia of those birds that are too sick or injured to ever recover.
Adoption
Thinking of adopting bird? Here is how it works.
Fill out the adoption application (you can find a link to the application on the left side of this page).
Send in your application filled out completely, including your Driver's License or ID card (without, it could slow down the adoption). Fax or mail it in.
We will call you and set up a HOME EVALUATION (home study). After completing the home study and we find that your home is suitable, then we will move on to the contract and the release form.
After we receive your application, we will call and let you know where the bird that you are interested in adopting is located.
Bird Visit: It is required that you visit the bird no less than two (2) times at a minimum of 30 minutes each time. The more time you can spend prior to adopting a new bird, the better off both you and your new companion will be.
How long does it take to adopt a bird?
This process usually takes about 1 week. At times it may take longer for a number of reasons, such as more than one applicant for the same bird, holidays, etc.
Why the home study?
* We want to ensure that we are placing these birds in the best home we can find for them. They deserve to have a happy and healthy life.
* We do follow up visits on all birds (Conure up to Macaw) for two (2) years. If we find that the bird we placed in your home is not receiving the care it deserves, we will remove the bird and return it to the program (read your contract very carefully). See follow up visits for more details.
MEMBERS get first choice on
all birds while they are in quarantine (please do not join just to get a bird early, that's not the correct reason for for joining). Once the bird is out of quarantine, if a member has not applied for adoption it will be available to the public at that time.
Membership: Members being members for 90 days or more may apply to adopt a bird first while the bird is in the quarantine period ( the approved adoptee may not complete adoption until the quarantine period has ended ). If the bird has no applicants after the first 30 days, the bird will be up for adoption to everyone.
Question: What can I not do when I adopt a bird from Beak n Wings?
1) When you adopt a bird you will be signing a contract stating that you will not give away, sell, or breed your new adopted companion. 2) The Contract states that if you need to get rid of your new companion, you must return the bird to Beak n Wings.
Contract
You must sign a Contract when you adopt a bird, no matter the species or size of the bird. You will be given an unsigned copy for your records. What's in the contract.
* You will be agreeing to not sell, breed or give away the bird.
* You will have ten (10) days to get the bird into the vet to have a check up. (We take all birds, Conure to Macaw, in for an Avian Blood Profile, gram stain, and grooming within it's first 30 days in the program)
* You will have to agree to take the training class prior to adoption (training class is 45 min to one (1) hour long). Should you fail to attend the training class,
your adoption will be declined.
There is much more to the contract than we have provided on this page, so please read your contract very carefully.
Payment Plan
PAYMENT PLAN: We do offer a payment plan on larger birds (Conure to Macaw) due to the higher fee for adoption. Your adoption fee must exceed
$400.00 to apply for a payment plan. At that point it will be half (1/2) down, then $100.00 a month until the fee is paid off (you may post date checks), email Beak n Wings for more details.
Release Form
|
